DAY 1 (TEACHING EXPERIENCE)
GENERAL
INFORMATION
Subject : General Science
Topic : Chromosome and Cell Cycle
Grade & Section : Grade 8
Guyabano (special section of art)
Date : January 22, 2019
Time : 1.45-2.45 PM (Grade 8 Guyabano)
TEACHING ACTIVITY
This is first section that I
teach. Mrs. Eligia R. Romares, my CT (Cooperating Teacher) has given me
permission to use the LCD Projector to make the class discussion more effective.
To begin the discussion, I gave
them a guessing game for motivation game. The guessing game that I gave them is
actually simple, but works effectively to gain their attention. The goal of
this game was to attract student attention, encourage them in learning and
introduce them to today’s topic. This game is just like the crossword game. All
they need to do is just to guess what secret letter in each blank box that I
gave them based on the given letters as clue. For example, I used the word
“CHOROMOSOME” and “INTERPHASE” as the secret words that they need to uncover,
because these word are related to our today’s topic.

The classroom discussion has
running so well. As I expected, the motivation game that I gave them is
effective to introduce them about today’s topic and act as a bridge between
present and previous topic. During the discussion, I also gave them several
HOTs question and analogy clue for every HOTs question. For example, I gave
them a question “without beads of string,
what will happen to the chromosome?”, then I showed to them a picture of a hank
of thread as analogy of bead of string function in to hold the solid structure
of chromosome. I found the students were really enjoy the question I gave them
and they were highly participate on the discussion, trying to solve the HOTs
question that I gave based on picture analogy.

The classroom discussion end a
head of time, so I have about 10 minutes to gave them short evaluation for
today’s topics. The result was amazed me, because in general, they have a very
good score and several of them reached the highest score.
The Grade 8 Guyabano is one of
many special sections in DCNHS (Davao City National High School). Their
performance and attention met my expectation.
RESULT AND IMPROVEMENT
There are several commentaries
that my CT, including the things that I need to keep and improve for next
teaching practice. My CT noticed that I don’t directly show the goal of
discussion the student, and also she also told me that it is important to avoid
saying “NO” to respond the wrong answer given by the student, because it will
degrade student’s motivation to learn something. These are the things that I
need to change and improve for the next occasion. My CT also pleased by my
performance in mastering and delivering the topic, keeping on asking HOTs
question, giving simple analogy, giving positive reinforcement, and class and
time management.

MISSCELANEOUS
- I found that the number of student in Grade 8 Guyabano is huge compare to number of student in a common classroom in public school in Indonesia
- The teacher allow the student to change their uniform into t-shirt in the afternoon so they still feel comfortable during afternoon class
These are several words I learned
during encountered with the student in the classroom. Several words below is
not Tagalog, but in Bisaya/Cebuano (common dialect used in Davao City). I have
marked the Bisaya/Cebuano words with asterix (*).
- Balik-balik (come back)
- Eroplano (aeroplane)
- Ganda (beauty)
- Maka (for)
- Magandang umaga (good morning)
- Magandang hapon (good afternoon)
- Maayo* (good)
- Maayong buntag* (good morning)
