TEACHING ACTIVITY
I need to teach 4 classes in a
day. My CT has given me a permission to teach a regular section to fulfill the
minimum hours of teaching required by SeaTeacher program.
To begin teaching the topic about
mitosis, I used a motivation game “4 pictures, 1 word”. In this simple game, I
showed to them 4 pictures and all of the pictures represent a word that related
to today’s topic. They need to work in a group to solve the word. I found that
the game was interesting and effective to attract student attention. But in
regular class, especially the Anonas, I found that they tried to participate on
the game, even that they were hard to guess the word (maybe because they were
lack of basic knowledge to start the discussion, unlike the other classes). I
found that “4 pictures, 1 word” was effective to encourage the student and to
introduce them about new term.

I keep on giving them HOTs
question during discussion. I found that the analogies that I gave them are
effective to make them understand about the abstract concept of mitosis. They
were very active on the discussion. They
gave me a lot of question to satisfy their curiosity regarding the topic. I
also put a lot of real image of cell and chromosome under the light microscope
and I found that it successfully attract their attention.
I also gave them the short
evaluation (in form of filling blank words) based on today’s topic in the end
of the session.
RESULT AND
IMPROVEMENT
Several commentaries from my CT,
including the things that I need to keep and improve for next teaching
practice. My CT noticed that the short evaluation that I gave to the student is
not fit the expectation of my CT. She told me that the evaluation that I gave
to the student is fit for the summative test. She gave me a suggestion, if I am
going to make short evaluation in form of filling the blank words, I suppose to
give them only 5-7 blank words so the student will not get confused with the
question.
In the other hand, my CT also pleased by my performance in
mastering and delivering the topic, especially the way I encourage the student
using analogy and enhancing the class participation at maximum level, beside of
keeping on asking HOTs question, giving simple analogy, giving positive
reinforcement, and class and time management.
MISSCELANEOUS
- I found that the number of student in regular section is so huge and it surprised me (imagine a normal class size, approximately 30m^2 with almost 80-90 student inside)
- Sadly, I found a lot of drop out student in Grade 8 Anonas. My CT told me that it was the thing that become a problem in public school, especially in regular class
- The student were really welcoming me and try to speak several common salutation in Bahasa Indonesia
These are several words I learned
during encountered with the student in the classroom. Several words below is
not Tagalog, but in Bisaya/Cebuano (common dialect used in Davao City). I have
marked the Bisaya/Cebuano words with asterix (*).
- Dali* (hurry)
- Mabuhay (welcome)
- Mabuti (good)
- Malugod na tanggapin (welcome to)
- Magandang Gabi (good evening)
- Magandang Gabii* (good evening)
- Mahal (lovely one)
- Mahal* (expensive)
